Panama Canal-The Eight Wonder of the World
The Panama Canal is the "Eighth Wonder of the World" . The canal was cut through nearly 9 miles of solid granite at the Continental Divide. |
The Panama Canal is 48 miles long and includes passage through three main locks: Miraflores 2-Stage Locks, Pedro Miguel Lock, and Gatun 3-stage Locks. |
Each lock is 300 meters long, 33 meters wide, and requires 26.7 million gallons of water to fill. The water pushes vessels through the canal through gravitational force. |
Almost 8,000 miles are saved by ships sailing from New York to San Francisco via the Panama Canal versus sailing around Cape Horn. |
Panama Canal- I sailed through the Panama Canal on Princess Cruises and it was a cruise I will never forgot. We had a suite aft of the ship. What a terrific spot to view our canal trip. |
