Valparaiso is a city of around 300,000 on the Pacific coast of Central Chile. Frequently referred to as simply Valpo, it is located approximately 120km west of the capital, Santiago de Chile.

The city is known for its bohemian culture, brightly colored houses, and beautiful seaside views. An interesting and unique mode of transportation in Valparaiso, is the Funiculars which offer gorgeous views of the cityscape, port, and the Pacific Ocean.
In 2003, the Chilean Congress declared Valparaiso to be "Chile's Cultural Capital" and home for the nations new cultural ministry.



Valparaiso has a very mild Mediterranean climate closely resembling that of San Francisco or Santa Barbara at a similar latitude in the northern hemisphere.




Valparaiso stages a major festival attended by hundreds of thousands of participants on the the last three days of every year. The festivals culminates with a "New Year's by the Sea" fireworks show, the biggest in all of Latin America.
